UNICEF and Asiana Airlines partnership

Asiana Airlines and UNICEF have signed a three-year partnership to enhance early childhood development in Ho Chi Minh City. The $400,000 agreement is expected to support the provision of quality early childhood development services in Ho Chi Minh City and the project will impact about 20,000 children from 2–5 years old in the city, especially for children of migrant workers.

“The partnership with Asiana Airlines is strategic for UNICEF as the lack of proper early child care services for migrant workers in Ho Chi Minh City has a negative impact on a child’s growth and development, and the consequences will also disadvantage the child when he/she enters primary school,” said Youssouf Abdel-Jelil, UNICEF Representative in Viet Nam.

Access to early learning for children of migrant workers is a particular challenge in HCMC. Parents continue to face a number of barriers to find available people who can keep their children during the working hours and ready to cope with the late hours. Under these circumstances children are most of the time deprived of breastfeeding to allow mothers to go back to work and care givers often don’t have the skills to ensure appropriate early stimulation and development. Children remain for long hours in very poor physical conditions deprived of early stimulation, toys and playing space and adequate follow-up of their nutrition, motor and cognitive development.

UNICEF and Asiana Airlines have been partners since 1994 through the programme Change for Good that has raised over US$10 million for children around the world. Change for Good allows passengers to donate any unwanted loose change of any currency at the end of their flight.

“Asiana Airlines is very proud to support UNICEF and Change for Good is a remarkable donation program helping children in need in Viet Nam and around the world. We are deeply thankful to all our passengers who participate in the campaign and support UNICEF to give children happiness all over the world.” said Oh Keun-Nyoung Executive Vice-President of Asiana Airlines.

This year, Viet Nam is added to the list of countries who benefit from this programme. Viet Nam remains an important market for Asiana Airlines with flights to Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang to their hub in Incheon International Airport, Seoul. The Viet Nam project is in line with their Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy to support sustainable development at their destinations.
