To All Those Suffering In Silence

To all the people that have been suffering but never reached out, take a deep breath. I know it has been a painful journey, a rough path to tread.

The first thing you need to remember is that you are not defined by what happened to you. While it is true that sexual abuse is a part of your story, it does not define you in any way, and you are much larger than it. Only what you love, and who you are can define you in the most accurate sense. And you need to remember always, that it was never your fault. Your age, choice of clothing, or level of intoxication is never to blame for.

Maybe, sometimes, you feel repulsed and disgusted by your body because it has been touched by unwanted hands, but remember they could never touch your kind heart and your beautiful soul. Maybe you feel like a part of you is missing but one day you will realize that you have always been whole. You will feel whole again. It takes time to recover but believe me, you are healing every day. Everyone reacts to traumatic events in a different way and at a different speed; take as much time as you need as there is no need to rush.

In the last few years, there have been a lot of people coming forward and speaking out against sexual abuse and it is so inspiring and empowering to witness such bravery. However, it is important to remember that you do not have to speak publicly if you do not feel comfortable doing so. This does not mean that you are weak; in fact, you encompass bravery, courage and strength. You are brave for living, for surviving, and simply for existing. After everything you have been through, you are still here and that is not weakness. I understand how difficult it is to function as a human being when even your body feels strange to you and most of your feelings are bottled up inside you. You have your own battle to fight and you are a warrior.

What happened to you might be a blemish on your canvas but you can still fill it with vibrant colors to make it beautiful again. It does not necessarily have to be the whole picture. You are the art director of your life and only you decide which direction your life will take. Your life is your own artwork and you are in full control of every stroke. The pain might still be visible between layers no matter how hard you try to paint over it — embrace it as a reminder of your great courage and resilience.

Finally, know that you are so much stronger than you think you are. I know it can be isolating sometimes when you do not have anyone to turn to for help. It is a challenge to open up and trust people again, especially if you have been hurt by someone you hold dear to your heart. However, don’t let it stop you from seeking help. Give people a chance. Give yourself a chance. Please, if you can, do reach out to school counselors or local social workers for further advice. Additionally, Child Helpline International, a global network of child helplines in 147 countries, also provides excellent services to children and young people in need. There are always people who are willing to listen to you and help you.

You are not alone.

You are never alone.
